I have been very busy promoting our non toxic vision since my last blog entry
at the beginning of this year and while I have not been blogging my adventure this weekend at the Green Living Show in Toronto
calls for another entry. While there were many business servants to serve you at this show I had the privelege of hearing
the speech of one person who to me defines servant leadership.
Clara Hughes, Canada's own Olympian is the only athlete in history to win both Summer and Winter Olympic medals.
Now retired from competitive Speed Skating and Cycling, she is an Ambassador for the most amazing Right To Play not-for-profit charitable organization. As business servants we should follow this leadership and
support this great institution which focuses upon bringing joy to the children.
From the Business Servant
perspective what I found most inspiring from her presentation was the dedication and freedom that she shared in the spirit
of winning: winning not so much in terms of medal performance yet more importantly in achieving one's personal best.
Her smile is a tremendous testimony that we should put the joy in this action as well.
While I could write volumes
on what I gained from her speech and meeting her afterwards I so love how she recounted the last race of her speed skating
career and what she wrote on her hand to reinforce her mantra of this time: Three phrases: Open Heart. Open Mind, and
Warrior. Now what should be added is that earlier in her presentation she mentioned that one of the hardest things
for her in leading up to this medal performance was that she asked herself to be kind: as in to wish for her competitors
to have a strong performance also. When I used to play tennis as a youth I did not have this focus and yet now when
I am playing I find it so amazing to actually wish my opponent to receive the joy of achieving an ace when serving.
After hearing this expression from Clara Hughes I especially relate to how this action enhanced my own performance.
I think inherently I have been doing this with my business activities for when I strive to influence my competitors to become
stronger our community becomes stronger which to me is what a big part of being a business servant is all about.
What really touched me deeply was to see the inspirational leadership effect Ms Hughes had on the youth. In front
of me in the line up to meet her was a young girl (about 10 years of age) and you could tell by the light in her
eyes that this was in fact a most precious moment: one that would instill the warrior spirit in her to achieve her personal
bests. It is for this reason I choose to define Ms. Clara Hughes as
being a true Business Servant: Business Servant in the sense the children of today are the future of our nation and with leadership
such as this we will have a positive tomorrow. I hope and pray that everyone will reach into this energy and carry the
flag for the betterment of all.
